Florida Elks Children's Therapy Services

A Child's Journey - Meet Mathew

mathew2Mathew is a happy and playful baby who likes to smile, but there’s a problem.

Unlike most 14 month olds, Mathew’s mobility skills are very limited. When most children are beginning to crawl or stand up by this age, Mathew relied solely on his family to physically move him around and to gather his play toys. The family was very worried and turned to the Florida Elks Children’s Therapy Services program for help.

Meet Mathew: Progress Report One

report1Upon my arrival, Mathew’s mother was delighted to share the new task he is now able to do. Mathew is sitting up by himself and helps clean up his toys by putting them in a bucket when handed to him. He is also banging toys together while holding them in each hand. He still resists tummy time but is tolerating it better.  The family is doing very well following through with Mathew’s home exercise program and they are extremely supportive.

Meet Mathew: Progress Report Two

report2Mathew received therapy today at home with his mother and older siblings for an hour. The siblings try to help Mathew but sometimes they are not always able to play with him as much as they would like because mom is concerned that they may be too rough with him. Therefore today’s session involved working with the siblings / brothers and teaching them how to play safely with Mathew.

Meet Mathew: Progress Report Three

report3Matthew was seen today at home with his mother present. He did very well in therapy playing with bubbles as he tried to catch and pop them. The older sibling are particularly very excited for Mathew because they are now able to play with him a lot more as Mathew likes chasing them around the house crawling.

Meet Mathew: Progress Report Four

report4Matthew received therapy at home today with mom for an hour. He has made good progress in all areas. He is able to pull himself to a standing position but is unable to lower himself down to a sitting position without falling. Dad just came back home from an out of state job assignment and was extremely delighted to see how much progress Matthew has made since he last saw him. He expressed to me how grateful he is to the Elks for making it possible to have therapy services delivered to his son at home.
