Florida Elks Children's Therapy Services

Windsor's Story

windsor storyWindsor was born in November 2010. She was a full-term baby, but there was a problem at birth. An emergency c- section was required and Windsor needed assistance to help her breathe. Although she stayed in the NICU for 19 days, there was still another problem. Windsor was blind. Her parents were naturally concerned for her health and development. They turned to the Florida Elks Children’s Therapy Services program for help.

Windsor Progress Report One

windsor report 1This month, I re-evaluated Windsor. Windsor mastered all of the goals we previously set. Her parents and I came up with new goals. I also accompanied Windsor and her parents to the ophthalmologist. The doctor confirmed that Windsor is not seeing. He declined to call her “blind” as he thinks this term is too vague, but he alluded to that fact. The doctor said, at best, Windsor is seeing light and dark and possible vague shapes.

Windsor Progress Report Two

windsor report 2This week when I saw Windsor, her physical therapist, Camille, and I worked together. We measured Windsor for a new therapeutic garment called a SPIO vest. This vest (made from neoprene) will help give Windsor light pressure on her torso to help her with postural control. This is just one of the many things that insurance does not cover. We will try to determine how to get financing for this special vest. Windsor also worked in the gait trainer. She is doing great standing and beginning to take steps.

Windsor Progress Report Three

windsor report 2I saw Windsor only twice this month. One of her sessions fell on a holiday and another week Windsor’s mom cancelled. Windsor is having great difficulty with sleeping. She cannot stay sleeping through the night. She also does not fall back asleep on her own. We have tried many strategies to help Windsor sleep with very limited success. Windsor’s parents just took her to have a “sleep study” to see if there is any medical reason for her limited sleep. Windsor and her parents are feeling very tired!

Windsor Progress Report Four

windsor report 4I helped the family choose and order a wheelchair for Windsor. We ordered a chair that will be super comfy and provides just enough support. The chair should grow with Windsor for many years…even though we are hoping she won’t need it for too long! We requested that the head rest have speakers. We are hoping since Windsor loves music so much that the music will help her sit up tall! The chair will be pretty and pink just like this picture, but it will be fitted exactly for her body. This picture is just the demonstration chair.
