In celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday, Jacksonville Elks Lodge #221 hosted a veterans’ appreciation dinner May 16. The evening was dedicated to honoring those who have served the country while providing an opportunity for fellowship, gratitude and community connection. Invitations were extended to veteran members of the lodge as well as members of the Vietnam Veterans Chapter #1046, which meets monthly at the lodge. An invitation was also opened to all lodge members so they could join in recognizing and thanking veterans for their service. Guests were encouraged to visit, share stories, and enjoy good food and music together. Entertainment for the evening was provided by Kent Kirby. Veterans attended free of charge, while other attendees paid a nominal fee to help support the event. Fifteen veterans were recognized during the evening, with an additional 29 guests attending in support. Veteran pins were given to all veterans in attendance from Cheryl Kehl, Exalted Ruler. Leslie Watson generously provided a beautifully decorated patriotic cake, while Nancy Olds prepared custard desserts. Kitchen volunteers Robin Pipkins, John Pipkins, Susan Harrell and Brent Reedy prepared the meal. The NAS Jacksonville FDR Sea Cadets served the meal with professionalism and pride while dressed in their Navy uniforms.
