On July 16, Sebring Elks Lodge #1529 donated $300 from the bingo charity fund to provide supplies for the Flash Stars Achievement Center. The nonprofit center was founded by Vernetta Bolton, who has 27 years of experience working with children in various settings. She has always wanted to run her own organization to help children in the community. All children in grades K-3 who reside in Highlands County are welcome to join. Flash Stars stands for Family, Love, Accountability, Success, Honor, Safety, Trust, Academics, Responsibility and Stellar.

Aden Schiavone, a junior honor student at Plant City High School and a member of the JROTC elected to make his Eagle Scout project a patriotic flag box. On May 14, Aden donated the handmade box to Plant City Elks Lodge #1727. Members of the lodge and the community are already using the box to drop off worn and tattered United States flags for proper retirement.

Sebring Lodge awarded two high school seniors — Chloe Orrell from Sebring High School and Aliany Zavala from Avon Park High School — with $1,250 scholarships. Joe Stockenberg, Exalted Ruler, attended both award ceremonies and announced the winners. These scholarships were funded by Monday night bingo proceeds.

On May 13, Sebring Lodge held a small fundraiser for the Harry-Anna Trust Fund, which supports Florida Elks Children’s Therapy Services and the Florida Elks Youth Camp. Member Barbara Carabello donated 12 baseball caps to the lodge to be sold, which were embroidered with the lodge logo. Diane Morse, Leading Knight, sold them within 15 minutes, raising $240.
On May 15, Sebring Lodge Exalted Ruler, Joe Stockenberg, and Leading Knight and Americanism Chair, Diane Morse, attended the seventh grade awards ceremony at Sebring Middle School to present a check for $1,500 from the Florida State Elks Association to Adianez Cordero, seventh grade first place state winner of the Americanism essay contest. This year’s topic was What Does Patriotism Mean to Me? The lodge also donated a $100 gift card to Adianez’s teacher, Justin Ludlow, in appreciation for his encouraging students to enter the contest.
